The Fourth of July 2004 at San Diego Beaches

Wow, the Fourth of July 2004 was quite a massive gathering of people. An estimated 300,000 people gathered at the Mission Beach and Pacific Beach areas. The weather was perfect with the marine layer burning off by 10:00AM. By 2:00PM the beach was packed and parking was impossible to find within a mile.

Photo above: Low tide at 6AM is the best time for gathering sea shells. Here is a group of sand dollars which were picked up within a 15 foot area. When looking for sea shells in the beach areas it is best to go during low tide. The shells mainly appear in pockets and are deposited according to the tides and breaks in the sand.

As usual all the local news crews were scattered through out the area. The beach area is "what's happening" in San Diego and the news crews were there to cover it.

At 7AM the were very few people on the beach getting set up. Here was a person planning on building a large sandcastle in Mission Beach.

Some of the beach goers enjoying another perfect day at the beach. It is perfect because the ocean tempature never goes much past 70 degrees and the ocean breeze is always cool and frsh even on very warm days that reach the 90's inland.

In addiiton to the high intensity party zones there is also a ton of quiet beach areas that are more suitable for families. Here one of the family members gets buried in the sand.

One of the more quiet family areas south of Pacific Beach Drive in Mission Beach.
The beach area in Mission and Pacific Beach stretches for about 3 1/2 miles.

The boardwalk areas are loaded with house parties on one side, beach parties on the other.
In the middle there is a ton of people on bikes, skateboards, and walking.

Although it is legal to drink on the beach, it is not legal to drink alchohol on the boardwalk area. Here a person gets a ticket just before his buddy loads him a beer bong.

The beach areas water were loaded with surfers. The people in this photo rented foam boards and got lessons from Pacific Surf School which is on Ormond Court and the boardwalk in Mission Beach.

The day after the Fourth the beach was trashed.
Thanks to the efforts of the City Parks and Recreation Department, local volunteers and I Love a Clean San Diego the beach area was returned to normal by noontime the following day.

I Love A Clean San Diego has regular beach clean ups at San Diego beaches. If you would like to volunteer, meet some new people and get a little excercise visit the I Love A Clean San Diego Website.

Another group participating in the ebach clean ups was the Surfrider Foundation. The Surfrider Foundation focuses on clean beaches and clean water and also looks for volunteers for their events. For more information on the Surfrider Foundation visit their website at >http://www.surfridersd.org/

These two groups along with the city workers helped remove over 100 tons of trash from the San Diego beaches over the 2004 Fourth of July weekend.
